Is it safe to assume that you escaped communism? I know that life in the country in communist countries has, historically, been unpleasant to say the least. However, I think that things are a bit different in American in town vs. country. Burton's books illustrate American country life vs. city life, and I don't think that country = death in America. It's no Arcadia, but life there can be pleasant, even as it can be physically demanding. Perhaps a bit rose colored, since these are books for children, I still think they're relevant and "applicable." Although I'll be interested to know about this idea of Tolkien's.
I would love an article on commentary on Studio Ghibli films if possible - “My neighbour Totoro” “Kiki’s delivery service” “Princess Mononoke”.
Maybe you should give me your syllabus and we can compare notes! What ages do you teach?
